Daytona Beach was not far along I 95, so we arrived
about 09.00. The Daytona International Speedway is close to the I 95 exit
and access is well organized, but we had little idea of what was available,
although Peter was looking for the infield. After some lane hopping and U turns
we got into the correct lane, paid for the tickets, and passed through the large
Armco corrugated pipe underpass into the infield.

We could not see much of the race from behind the pits, so
after the roll off and start we wandered to different points of the circuit.
There were two heavy showers which red flagged the race during which there was
slow, painstaking blowing of the track to dry it off. We both got soaked running
back to the car, and the event was losing its attraction for Joyce. We had some
surprisingly good and reasonably priced fish and chips for lunch (surprising in
a closed environment like this, food was not a rip off, but T shirts were $20).
The race was finally red flagged at the second shower, and the second race
started on time at 2.15. These were the faster Winston Cup cars with the top
drivers. However, since we had some more driving to do, and because all the
infield cars had to pass through the Armco pipe to exit, we left before the end
to get away without delay. Peter had a scarlet face from the UV, which had
penetrated the overcast. Joyce wore a hat!!
