June 1996: Waskesiu Ferry Loop
Sandy, Chris, Gilbert and I drove up to Waskesiu for a weekend of
biking. We were blessed with awesome hot weather. We camped in tents at
????.
The first morning, we awoke and decided to loop around the south end of
Waskesiu, then work our way up the western shore, somehow cross over to
the eastern side at the narrows and then cycle back.
We biked 40 (?) km along gravel roads, then stopped at a grocery
store/motel/? and asked one of the local fishermen if he would ferry us
across to the other side. The narrows are less than 200 meters wide. He
said sure, and two boat trips later we were across.

On the other side was a steep bank which we had to scramble up, but we
were across and knew the road was nearby.

Once we had gotten to more or less level ground, we started looking for
a way to get to the road... and then stumbled across a marvelous, wide
open trail. We descended into thicker
woods, and still the trail was wide open and clear. Then we encountered a boardwalk and found
ourselves surrounded by ferns. Magical.

Eventually we made our way up and out to the main road, and discovered that we had been on
the Narrows Nature Trail... no bikes allowed. :-(

Ten or so more kilometers of gravel road to go, then another thirty on paved road. We were
pretty tired and dry when we finally made it back to camp. All in all, a great day.
Campsite and home-made bike rack.
The next day, we decided to do the Freight Trail near the South end of the park. Having only a
single vehicle, we had to make it a loop, so we parked the car at the Elk Trailhead and biked 20
km along the highway to the Anglin Lake Trail. We were ready for an easy ride and this looked
to be pretty flat.
Chris and Sandy, ready to rock
It was very pleasant, with the rough track slowly turning into a single track. Fallen trees to ride
over. Chris demonstrated how it was possible to go over the handlebars by simply clamping on
the front brake.

Really nice little ride. We continued on back to the car, loaded up the bikes and toodled on back
to Saskatoon.
