The HobieCat 16 is a great boat for all kinds of things. On calm days, I take groups of people out for
a gentle,
dry putter around the lake. On windy days, we get bundled up in wetsuits (for padding and protection
from
bumps and bruises in addition to the warmth) and go out. Big winds mean we can fly a hull with 2 crew
out on
the trapeze.
I think the boat looks fast just standing still... maybe I am biased.
Looking fast! Only had the boat for a week at this point in time
August 1999:
It took a long time until I got any photos which captured some of the fun on a cat. We took a cheap
waterproof disposible along with us on a sail in August 99. It was hard to get far enough away for a
good
picture.

Lots of spray off the bottom hull
Warren at the helm, Alison hanging out
The skipper usually gets the wettest
Except when you submarine a hull and turn turtle. Then EVERYONE gets wet. We are all
laughing hysterically here. I swam away to get the photo before helping to right the boat.
Upright again, wetter but...
No wiser!
After sailing with me a little bit, Greg decided that he needed a cat too. So he found and bought a
Hobie16 just like ours. He is good to have around the lake. We sail together a lot, both of us
enjoying being out on windy days, and don't really care if it is hot or cold. We were still out
sailing in October last year...
August 2000:
Rick McCharles took some video footage of us from the dock using his Digital Sony Handy
Cam. He was able to take pictures like this from half a kilometer away!
Kim and Elaine out on the trapezes. Almost flying a hull. Lots of spray.
Summer 2002
With my new camera (Olympus C2100), we were finally able to get some decent photos of the
Hobies from the shore. These were all taken by Peter Long from our dock.
June 2003: Warren with Kim on the trapeze. Flying a hull before we even hit the whitecaps!
July 2003: Greg at the helm, Warren on the trapeze. Looks easy...
July 2003: Warren, Brent on the trapeze. No whitecaps doesn't mean no wind!
