Welcome to Winter Camping

I had always wanted to go winter camping. I finally started doing so in early 1997. So far we haven't done anything impressive, only short little trips, with help close at hand.

Our first step was to build a quinzhee (a snow cave, made by piling the snow up, waiting about 4 hours for the sintering process to bind the snow together, and then digging out a hollow on the inside) just outside the cabin, and then sleep in it.

The next step was to try the same thing in the woods, but not so far that we would be unable to make it back to the car! We cross-country skied into the park, for about 2 hours. Then we left the trail, and took off into the brush, and built our quinzhee.

Then Joan and I slept out in tents on the lake outside our cabin in cool weather, about -15 degrees C (about 0 degrees F). I reserve the word cold for temperatures below -25 degrees.

Our most recent experience was a great group ski/snowshoe trip into FishLake in January 2001. We had a great time and the trip report is done!
