We gathered our old group together, and convinced a few more to join us on Mount Robson. We last hiked it in 2009, so almost 10 years ago.

Quick Summary

  • 2 days to hike in, uphill all the way
  • 3 full days for day hikes from Berg Lake
  • 2 days to hike out, downhill all the way

Saturday 2018-08-04 Mount Robson – Getting There – To Hinton

We loaded up the car, with a dog kennel on top. Just for the trip to Closson’s and our dog sitter. The drive to Hinton and the Days Inn was uneventful. The usual rain storm. And the usual pack sorting and sharing of common food and cooking stuff was done in the hotel rooms late into the night. Weighing of the packs was compulsory. We always have people with packs that are too heavy. Better to leave it all behind before you even start.

Sunday 2018-08-05 – Day 1 – To Whitehorn

On Sunday, we hiked halfway up. The Whitehorn camp is pretty nice, in the flood plain just below the next big step up.

The day started out delayed. Breakfast was good and quick, but by the time we got to the trail head, day-hikers had filled the whole parking lot and the next couple kilometers of road. We dropped off our packs and most people at the trail head, and then the drivers drove off down the hill and parked the cars. I had to do the long walk twice, because we wanted to get rid of a fuel bottle: everyone was already too heavily loaded.

The hike itself starts out on really easy, wide trail. Lots of trees and shade as you follow the Robson River up the valley. Tantalizing glimpses of Mount Robson pop out every now and then. Once you hit the gravel plain and circle Kinney Lake it gets much warmer. We ate lunch at the Kinney shelter, then continued around the lake. A few kilometers later, we were at Whitehorn.

Monday 2018-08-06 – Day 2 – To Berg Lake

Another 11-ish kilometer day. Once again, things started out pretty easy, wandering along the Valley of 1000 Falls. Then we then hit the valley head wall and started up the switchbacks. You quickly gain lots of altitude, with views of the various falls as the trail nears the ravine containing the Robson River.

Part way up, we once again visited the magnificent Emperor Falls. Only videos can do it justice. We were all thrilled to get soaked. Then we have the long trek along the edge of the flood plain below Berg Lake. Hot and dry.

As soon as Berg Lake and the glaciers pop into view, everything become magical. It is always more impressive that you can remember. The campsite is wonderful and the sight and sounds of the glacier cracking and calving is a highlight.

The campsite and cook shelter are very pleasant, and once again, we were thrilled to be right in the middle of one of the prime base camp locations in the Rockies. So many trails and areas to see and explore.
