We did a little bit of Sunshine Village towards Mount Assiniboine in 2005. This time we did the other end of Assiniboine.  And thought a helicopter would make it more enjoyable.  It did.  The trip can be summarized as :

  • Helicopter in and set up camp
  • 3 days of day hikes
  • 2 days to hike out

2016-08-06 Drive to Calgary

The usual drive:

  • Lots of stuff loaded into the car
  • Huge rainstorms and flooding in Calgary

2016-08-07 – Day 1 – Drive to Mount Shark and Helicopter to Magog Lake

This day had a bit of everything:

  • Long drive to Mount Shark, at least 3 hours because of the gravel roads and fog. Mountain goats!
  • Helicopter queue took a long time. We watched it coming and going for several hours before it was our turn. Rain and low clouds kept threatening to cancel flights, and when our turn came, we flew through a bunch of drizzle. Still magical though.
  • Lots of rushing around the campsite trying to find open tent pads. Eventually we all found ones, but we were not close together.
  • Rain and HAIL made the cook shelter the place to be. Happy to have the tent survive the hail

2016-08-08 – Day 2 – Og Lake

  • Woke up to fog and drizzle.
  • Nice breakfast, then set off for Og Lake. We spent 5-ish hours doing lots of wandering through huge meadows while the clouds circled overhead. Og Lake was fun, the lower water level making the lake edge extra dramatic.
  • Dinner and Bang and Bed.
