Highly recommended.
We expected a beach walk, but this turned out to be much more of a jungle hike. It started out with a 45 minute bus ride. The bus was packed with people, but almost everyone was diligent with their masks, the only exceptions being a few tourists… We arrived in the little town, and then just stumbled off in what we guessed was the right direction.
The first 25 minutes were spent winding through and around ocean side residences. Then we went into the jungle, the path varying from well maintained concrete steps to a steep narrow dirt trail. After an hour or so, we popped out of the jungle and went down the steep slope to Playa Colomitos, a wonderful, popular little beach. We stripped down and went to a quick swim, and then resumed our hike. The path out of the beach was small and inconspicuous.
An hour or so later, we wandered into Casitas Maraita and decided it was time for drinks and snacks. Then our hike turned into the more expected beach walk. We walked along Playa Caballo and then arrived at Playa Animas. A short while later, we decided it was time to find a water taxi to get home. This was easy, and the only tricky aspect was whether or not to go all the way back to Puerto Vallarta or just to return to Boca de Tomatalan. We opted for the cheaper version, and once again took the bus. This time, a construction zone caused huge delays. We ended up getting off the bus and walking the kilometer or so. The bus only passed us as we arrived home. We should have started walking sooner…
