We are lucky to live in an area with frequent aurora. For awhile there, they seemed to be pretty rare. But, once again, in 2023=2024 things seem to have ramped up again. Solar flare cycle, I assume.
We see them here in Saskatoon, and up at Emma Lake. There are lots of times when I miss going out when I should, and lots of times when there is nothing to see, inspite of strong forecasts. We see them in winter and summer. Green is the most common colour, followed by purples, and then, rarely, reds.
I get my best results with just a cell phone, with 4 minute night mode exposures. Android also stitches together a nice 1 second movie which captures the motion pretty well. This is just enough time to see the starfield rotate a bit.
