Canoeing In Saskatchewan

Unexpectedly, Saskatchewan is a great place for canoeing. Take a look at a map of northern Saskatchewan; the place is half lakes and rivers.  In the old days, the government provided little booklets of different canoe trips.  I used to collect them, along with personal handwritten trip reports, and store them in a 3-ring binder.  Those days are gone, but the documented canoe routes can still be found on-line (click here)

This is a summary of the canoeing trips we have done in Saskatchewan. I started way back in 1982. The first trips were really very basic ones, done in the Prince Albert National Park. I remember being thrilled about “having to do a portage”. Prince Albert Park had “wilderness campsites” which included pit toilets and firewood.

Our trips have gradually moved up to bigger lakes, gotten more remote, and included bigger whitewater. It has been an easy, almost gentle progression. Some trips are memorable for everything going right, while others are memorable for us rising to the challenge.

In 2005, I got to participate in the Saskatchewan Centennial Canoe race. Paddling 1000 km across Saskatchewan in a 25 foot Voyageur-style cedar strip canoe built by Martin Bernardin.
