Puerto Vallarta 2023

The usual gang was present. This year, our accommodations weren’t quite as nice, but the location, while not on the beach, was central to everything. In general, we did more stuff in town, and less stuff out of town. I was just fine with this because we were going kayaking (!!!) for our third week in Mexico.

There a several albums below:

Planes, Airports and Taxis

Left Saskatoon at -28, arrived in PV at +28. Taxi to the Romantic Zone was easy, but as always, more expensive than we remembered.

Volaris flight to Baja was cancelled and changed, but the notification to us failed to go through. Some miss-step between Booking.Com and Volaris. Since we were already at the airport, and had to get to La Paz by the next evening, we convinced them to lets us overnight in Mexico City, and then fly out to Cabo the next morning. Sandy convinced them that Volaris should pay for the hotel. We got to Baja with plenty of time to complete the drive to La Paz before our kayaking meeting.

Where did we stay?

Our primary accomodations were at My Beach Condo. Pleasant enough. Not quite on the beach, but close. And just across the street from Derby City Burgers. Therefore very noisy almost all the time. But central to all the stuff that we do here.

We also had a few single day stays at various hotels as we travelled to and from Baja for kayaking. Camino Real in Mexico City, El Moro in La Paz, Hotel Aeropeurto in Cabo and finally, the City Express Hotel for a quick layover in Puerto Vallarta before flying back to Saskatoon

Beaches, Pools and Ocean Walks

We spent lots of time in the sun. The weather is always the same, warm at night and dry and hot and sunny in the day.

Amapas 353

Craig and Barry stayed at Amapas 353, which always ends up being the gathering place. The condo is great, and the rooftop is greater. We cooked a bunch of meals there, so we managed to eat out only 50% of the time,

Eating (and Drinking) Out

We have a lot of favourite places to eat in PV. And we try to check out new places as well. This time we visited El Santo Taco, Tacos Revolucion, The Coffe Cup, Los Molcajetes, Let’s Pho, Jalato Ice Cream, Derby City Burgers, Cafe San Angel, Nacho Daddies, Salud, Saphire and The Swedes. In Sayulita we ate at Los Pablos on the edge of the beach. At Las Animas Beach, we had awesome tacos at the Pichon restaurant and bar.

Walking Around PV

We really like PV. Lots of friendly, happy people. Lots of partying and bars. Lots of food. Lots of colours. It can also be smelly and dirty, but after awhile, that becomes part of its charm. The sidewalks and stairs are death traps unless you pay close attention to where you put your feet.

Nightlife

Part of the charm of PV is the nightlife. The place is busy. And there are lots of shows to take in, and bars to visit. Blondie’s started one evening. We saw Amy Armstrong twice, and Sutton Lee Seymour once. And drinks at the bar on the top of the Pinnacle Resorts.

Boca to Las Animas Hike

Once again, we chose to do this hike. Bus trip was much nicer without Covid and highway construction. The hike itself was again excellent, and seemed much shorter than last time. Much easier when you know what to expect. The tacos on Animas beach were awesome.

Sayulita Day Trip

Sayulita is a trendy, surfing town, about an hour north of PV. We got a pair a driver’s to take us out there for the day. It was surprisingly different from PV. Lots of families and hippies. Hot and dusty. And a real (beginner) surfer culture. We will think about spending some more time in Sayulita.
