West Coast Trail 2013

Summary

  • 7 days (6 nights out) on one of the most beautiful and varied hikes in Canada
  • Wonderful weather.  The west coast is famous for rain.  Once again, we lucked out.  One day with a few hours of rain.  Friends who went the week before and friends who went  the week after, both endured huge amounts of rain; no days without.
  • This time we decided to do it from North to South.  The last time, the north end was easy, just a little walk in the woods.  This seemed to be a pleasant way to start out.  We were wrong.

Day 1: Wednesday, August 7

Brian’s Water Taxi was still operational, and this time, we took it at the start of the hike. As always, wonderful to be on the water and see the whales. This time, we had a chance to scout out the trail before hand. A preview of what was to come.

We stumbled onto a van we offered to take us the first few km. down the road to the actual trail head. We were thrilled to swap some hard-earned cash against wasting time on the road.

At the trailhead, the hike itself started out with Keiran discovering he had forgotten a belt… A short length of rope provided the needed functionality for the next week.
