94-07-07: Thursday:
Day 7: 31km paddled, Portages 12,11,10,9 (=23,24,25,26)
- up early, several power boats with load people going up/down the river
- BF =
- windy, but nice day
- whirlpool-type rapid, with young pelicans
- modify original course to get as much shelter as possible from the wind
- relief when round the bend and start up towards Besnard.
- lunch = soup, just before starting up Besnard creek.
- drag+line up creek, KR bangs up legs until learns the technique. Line up two more rapids.
- W+S swamp canoe, almost lose things (pants + coffee cup), Sandy crosses rapid, then falls in
a bruises knee!
- K+J portage 3rd rapid, then attempt to portage 4rth, but far too much deadfall, so have to turn
around and load up canoe again. W+S return along portage trail (?trail). W+K wade/drag canoe
up (very quick and fast, as we improve with practice, and don't care about how wet we get)
while S+J walk up along trail.
- start to set up camp, but K discovers bear signs. Take tent back down, but continue with
dinner (Judy does dinner = Turkey barley pilaf) anyways, then pack up again.
- Dipper (+babies) fuss up and down the shore.
- paddle with wind, continue past commercial fishing camp (way past, to avoid garbage)
- find nice island in dark, with campsites way up high. Bed very quickly
94-07-08: Friday:
Day 8: 34km paddled, Portages 8,7,6, (=27,28,29)
- hot and sunny in tent, but by 9:00 cloudy
- S+W do BF, scramled eggs on bagels (powdered eggs very good!) + coffee (W burns toast,
as usual)
- paddle with wind down Besnard, keeping close to east shore to avoid wind.
- duck in behind island for tea.
- paddle round point into bay, HARD paddling into wind towards Gull lake portage.
- portage = smelly muck
- small headwind across nameless lake
- lunch on point at end of bay which opened into Gull lake.
- wind changes to come from south, once again, headwind.
- portage into Morning lake very pleasant, paddle
- strong headwinds round the point, unable to make original destination, have to hop up behind
islands.
- all islands are no good for camping, paddle hard to get across to lee side of lake.
- found nice site along east shore, sheltered from wind
- 10 mins. after arriving, wind died
- 4 loons joined us, just off-shore
- Sandy does dinner=Pasta + Putanesca sauce (nice fire-pit) (cooking in dark, with K holding
flashlight)
- coffee and bed, very late
