94-07-09: Saturday:
Day 9: 33km paddled, Portages 5,4,3,2,1 (=30,31,32,33,34)
- BF=?
- short paddle to portage, W unloads canoe while K waits
- see 2 Lund's going down the stream, so load up canoe, and paddle on after them.
- drag over beaver dams, catch up and pass power boats in meanders as they paddle.
- huge portage trail, 20 ft. wide, with lots of logs to put boats down on. Very quick and short for
canoes, then watch 7 guys carrying 400 lb. boats.
- paddle into headwinds down Triveet lake.
- nice portage into Clam.
- paddle thru narrows, stop for tea.
- paddle across to narrows in middle of Clam lake, hard going, directly into wind. Lots of hiding
behind islands.
- bigger wind once thru narrows, cling to South shore to try and hop up the peninsulas
- get out to eat lunch on "ant island", but have to leave. Whole island seems to be an ant
hill
- cross to point on other side, nice site after climbing up steep "stairway/rockpile"
- K+W swim (skinny dip, girls avert eyes). Also say "Do it before it rains".
- nice lunch, run out of bread, and finish off several other things.
- cool weather rolls in, too late for girls to take bath!
- paddle down channel, huge wind rolls in, then DOWNPOUR.
- go into portage, wait a little bit, then complete portage in rain.
- into canoes, paddle a little bit, then take shelter from thunder in the reeds on one shore of
"swamp".
- paddle through meanders, into headwinds ALL the time
- W runs down 1k portage, decides too far, come back paddle down thru wild rice (easy going,
in spite of guide book saying it was rough going)
- drag down creek at outlet of Pine Brook, way too wide and shallow.
- paddle across Head lake, more big headwinds
- 1k portage along skidoo trail thru muskeg. (2 stages, 700m, then 300 m). Nice and clean but
hard going with spongy muskeg.
- load up canoes, paddle 10 mins. to nearest point (wind even worse!). See lightning, so we hide
on the point. J says "Set up tents, skip dinner".
- tents up in 10 mins., get in, then @ 10:30, monster thunderstorm comes in. Flashes light up
whole inside of tent like X-rays. Lasts 3? hours?
- No dinner, (and didn't make it to cabin)
94-07-10: Sunday:
Day 10: 19km paddled, take out in Bell Bay
- up @ 6:00, out of tents by 6:20
- paddling by 7:00, misty, subtle wind
- 7:30, arrive a K+J cabin.
- stagger in, J feeds us pancakes + coffee
- 9:00 start paddling to Bell Bay
- wind from NWW, good almost tail wind, strong enough to cause white caps, lots of canoe
rolling in waves.
- met other canoe as pulled in (end of 3 day trip), arrived at 12:00 noon!!
- drive LaRonge and drop off K's stuff. It seemed magical to just press a peddle, and have the
car move!
- drive home, arrive 5:00 pm.
