Once again, we were paddling into a headwind. But the river was much bigger, and the current
helped. The rapids were much bigger too! Here are Aaron and Susan, in the rollers. No, the
canoe isn't really that low in the water, they are just in a valley between the rollers.
A few rapids later, Crystal decided that she wasn't going to run this one. Aaron volunteered to
go with Shane...
Aaron, in the orange life jacket, managed to gather up most of the packs and stuff that floated
(Shane had neglected to tie everything in this time). Keith and Judy paddled out, and dragged
him to the opposite shore. Sandy and Warren went out, and dragged Shane and the canoe back
to the near shore. We built a fire and dried everyone out. Some gear was lost.
Once under way again, we saw several groups of bears. A mom and two cubs, a ginger cub on
an island, a big black one disappearing into the woods. Impossibly, as we paddled south, we
were going into a strong headwind. Then the channel turned north, and we were still paddling into
a strong headwind.
Once we hit Nipew, the headwinds increased. We agreed to split up into 2 canoe groups and
carry on. Aaron and Susan came with Sandy and I. We creeped along the lake, hiding in the
wind shadows behind islands and the rough shoreline. By 10 pm, we had made it to Boyle
Island, where we found a beautiful sheltered bay with a nice beach. Had a nice fire and dinner.
On to next day
