We set an alarm to get up early, we still had a long way to go in one day. At 8:06 am we were
paddling. Into a headwind (surprise, surprise!). Passing Fletcher Island, Sandy saw a "big
honking bear". We then turned south (again, leaving the recomended route) and headed down
towards Sluice Falls. Aaron and Susan took the portage trail, while Sandy and Warren ran most
of sluice. Only brave canoeists (and kayakers!) run all of Sluice. The ledge at the bottom is very
dangerous. In the picture, you can see the "horizon line", showing the drop over the ledge.
The effort of getting to the portage trail 3/4s the way down Sluice was not worth it. I should have
just portaged the whole thing.
The bottom of Sluice gave us the best indication of just how low the water really was.
Then the drizzle started. We ran Corner Rapids, Murray Rapids and then Otter Rapids. Then the
rain really started coming down. We had another 5 kilometers to paddle to Missinipi. We got
there totally soaked, and shivering. We changed into dry clothes in the car, loaded up the canoes
and headed for Saskatoon.
The other party, Keith and Judy, and Shane and Crystal ended up arriving not too long after us.
They took the Great Devil and Little Devil portages, and at Devil Lake, Keith hitched a ride to
Missinip where they picked up one of their cars. As night fell, they discovered that the other car
had a flat, and had more adventures trying to get it fixed...
